Cleaning Business Startup Checklist

Starting a cleaning business is mostly a sequencing problem. Do things in the wrong order and you'll spend money on kit before you have clients, or take a booking before you're insured.

This checklist puts the setup in a sensible order for a solo cleaner starting from nothing.

How to use this checklist

  • Work top to bottom. Everything above the 'first clients' section should be done before your first paid job.
  • Don't buy equipment beyond the basics until you know what work you're actually winning.
  • Set your systems up before you're busy. Retrofitting admin while running 20 jobs a week is miserable.

The checklist

Legal and financial setup

  • Decide sole trader or limited company
  • Register with the tax authority in your country
  • Open a separate business bank account
  • Arrange public liability insurance before the first job
  • Add employers' liability if you'll have employees
  • Understand your record-keeping and tax deadlines

Positioning and pricing

  • Choose your service focus: domestic, end of tenancy, Airbnb, commercial
  • Define your service area and realistic travel radius
  • Work out your true hourly cost including travel, supplies and unpaid admin
  • Set your prices and write down what's included and excluded
  • Write your cancellation and payment terms

Kit and presentation

  • Core kit: vacuum, mop system, caddy, microfibre, basic chemicals
  • Business name, simple logo and branded clothing
  • Business phone number or a separate work profile
  • Google Business Profile created and verified
  • A simple one-page website or booking link

First clients

  • Tell everyone you know, personally, that you've started
  • Post in local community groups where allowed
  • Leaflet a small number of well-chosen streets
  • Approach letting agents and Airbnb hosts locally
  • Ask for a review after every single early job

Systems before you get busy

  • One calendar for all jobs, not notes and messages
  • A client record for every customer with access and preferences
  • A repeatable quote and invoice format
  • A written cleaning checklist you can hand to a future cleaner
  • A weekly hour to review money in, money out and next week's schedule

Pro tips

  • Your first ten reviews are worth more than your first ten thousand leaflets. Prioritise anything that produces them.
  • Track where every enquiry came from from day one. Within three months it tells you exactly where to spend your time.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to start a cleaning business?

Registration with your tax authority, public liability insurance, basic cleaning kit, a way to take bookings and payments, clear pricing, and a plan for finding your first clients.

Do I need insurance to start cleaning houses?

Yes, public liability cover should be in place before your first paid job. Many agencies and commercial clients also require proof before they'll book you.

How do I get my first cleaning client?

Personal contacts, local community groups and a verified Google Business Profile produce the first bookings fastest. Ask for a review after each early job to build momentum.

What software do I need when starting a cleaning business?

Something that keeps jobs, clients and invoices in one place from the start. Retrofitting systems later, once you're running a full schedule, is far harder than starting organised.
