House Cleaning Checklist (Printable, Room by Room)
A standard domestic clean goes wrong in the same places every time: the bits nobody can see from the doorway. A written checklist fixes that, it keeps quality consistent whether you or a new cleaner is on the job, and it makes it obvious what is and isn't included when a client asks.
This is a practical working checklist rather than a wishlist. Everything on it can realistically be completed on a regular clean of an average 2, 3 bedroom home.
How to use this checklist
- Work top to bottom and back to front in every room, so dust falls onto floors you haven't cleaned yet.
- Do the bathroom chemicals first, leave them to dwell, then come back, that dwell time is where most of the cleaning happens.
- Tick items off as you go rather than from memory at the end. Missed items are almost always the ones you 'remember' doing.
- Give clients the same checklist. It sets expectations before the first visit and prevents scope creep later.

Whole property
- Empty all bins and replace liners
- Dust light fittings, lampshades and ceiling corners for cobwebs
- Wipe light switches, sockets and door handles
- Dust skirting boards and window sills
- Clean internal glass on doors and mirrors
- Hoover carpets, rugs and edges
- Mop hard floors, working out of the room
Kitchen
- Clear and wipe all worktops
- Clean hob, splashback and extractor front
- Clean exterior of oven, microwave, fridge and dishwasher
- Wipe cupboard fronts and handles
- Descale and polish sink and taps
- Wipe kettle, toaster and small appliances
- Sweep and mop floor, including under the kick boards where accessible
Bathrooms
- Apply limescale treatment to shower screen, taps and tiles first
- Clean and disinfect toilet, including behind the pan and the base
- Clean bath, shower tray and screen
- Descale taps and shower head
- Clean sink, plughole and vanity unit
- Polish mirrors and chrome
- Wipe tiles, remove visible mould spotting
- Mop floor including behind the door
Bedrooms
- Change bedding if requested and agreed in advance
- Dust headboards, bedside tables and shelves
- Wipe wardrobe fronts and mirrors
- Hoover under the bed where accessible
- Straighten and tidy visible surfaces
Living areas and hallway
- Dust and polish all surfaces, TV units and shelves
- Wipe TV screen with a dry microfibre
- Plump cushions, fold throws, straighten furniture
- Hoover upholstery and under cushions
- Clean the front door glass and wipe the frame
Before you leave
- Walk each room from the doorway and look at it as the client will
- Check floors for missed hair, especially bathrooms and bedrooms
- Turn off lights, close windows, lock up as agreed
- Leave a short note or message confirming what was done and anything the client should know

- The last five minutes decide the review. A doorway check in each room catches almost every complaint before the client sees it.
- Agree in writing what is excluded, inside ovens, inside windows, laundry, ironing and tidying of clutter are the four most common disputes.
